does this only happen in 'stratis life' servers?

are you able to see chat text from any other channels? (side, global, etc?) when you deleted everything, did you ensure you deleted your Documents/Arma 3/[name].Arma3Profile, and the profiles in Documents/Arma 3 Other Profiles/[name].Arma3Profile?

No it happens on every server. I can see every other channel just not direct. If i remember i did delete my profiles i am 75% sure i did atleast.

I am now deleteing the data and trying again 2 make sure i did

It did not work

Please verify you are actually seeing/using the direct channel (global and direct have similar color), and that there are, in fact, units close enough that you should be able to hear through direct.

I have several times, standing right next to people and checking that it says direct several times. I have searched for fixes online and i found quite a few reports of it happening in arma 2, I have not seen anything for arma 3 tho i seem to be the only one having this problem

Are you using any mods? If so, try reverting to stock and see if the problem persists, so we can try and pinpoint the cause.

I downloaded a mod during alpha but uninstalled it, havent done a mod in beta but i have tried uninstalling it than reinstalling it

I updated the additional information and added the dxdiag file so you dont have to scroll so much as well

I'm pretty sure this is a problem related to Realtek Audio Driver (yes, audio driver). I had the same problem with ARMA 2 and have sorted out it in this way.

Follow these steps:

  • Open Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording tab
  • Click with the right mouse button inside the window and enable "Show Disabled Devices"
  • Click on "Stereo Mix" and then change the properties to enable it.

This is like it looks like: http://imgur.com/Qjtljsk

Plugging a microphone and then run ARMA 3, should work as well.

I don't know whether the developers are aware of this problem. I hope they fix it even in older ARMA versions.

Thing is that could effect mics but i do not think that would effect chat 2 i will test it i guess and hopefully it is fixed but idk

In ARMA, voice and chat are tied in direct chat channel. I feel quite lucky for sorting out my problem, since no error messages has helped me.

I hope that help you. In case it does, please update the ticket setting "Reproducibility" from "unable to reproduce" to "Reproducible" or so, and the description/title accordingly. That should help the developers.

BIS should really investigate this issue, as Realtek Audio driver are quite popular and many people are subject to this bug (*1). Maybe not a BIS fault, though.

Thanks yeah it fixed it :) I can finally see direct chat also i think it would be more helpful to BIS if you were to make a topic on this considering you know how to fix it and know more about it than myself

This worked for me too. I was searching for a fix to this all day yesterday and couldn't find a fix, no idea why I didn't find this post. Thanks so much.

Changed due to finding a fix on how to fix it but it is still a bug

BrutoDetestsSB Knows more about this than me but asked i do this

This is still an issue, (also in A2/OA) Plugging in a microphone and restarting their game allowed the player to see direct chat messages correctly again. (fix from BrutoDetestsSB's post above)

Player with issue was running Windows 8, default realtek audio software and had no mics plugged in.
