Helicopter controls are way too arcade
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

flying a helicopter feels like flying a plane. There is no slowdown while turning (makes it even difficult to stop the helicopter).
when the helicopter is upside down, there is no loss in control, what makes looping ridiculously easy.
people who played TOH will be very disappointed.

The looping is bloody hilarious though.

My wild guess is that the physics for pretty much every aspect of the game are way not final...

Certainly hope so as there's a post from one of the devs on the bis forums saying ToH FM would be in A3. I keep reminding myself it's a early alpha:)

I totally agree. One of the great things about arma is that is not like all the other mainstream arcade stuff. Helicopters are in fact to much arcade now.

up vote

i was able to fly a helicopter inverted for a good 30 seconds

Once again. Flight model that is now in Arma 3 Alpha is only temporary. They're gonna use the Take on Helicopters flight model for later versions. From BI forums Confirmed features

The focus of the Alpha is infantry anyway, choppers will come along in the Beta.

I hate the chopper controls now. I liked how they worked in Arma2, heavy choppers were slugs, good choppers were nimble, but no chopper could wiz around upside down and loop de loop etc. In this game at the moment it is like an arcade game and it needs to be a bit more realistic.

This report is more or less the same as #2192.

Since both have high vote counts (and merging is not possible), are there any suggestions as to how the two tickets can be made more distinctive? Otherwise, I will have to close one. (Normally the one with fewer votes.)

@MadDogX
No Suggestion.
I hope it doesn't matter too much, how many votes those issues get, while BIS could be planning to change/switch the flight model anyway.
Making this issue more distinctive, might let the votes it got become invalid.
Best thing to do would probably be to get a short answer from the Dev-Team about what their plans are in issue #0002192 and close this one here.
I just see this issue as something, that doesn't need so many votes. It either gets changed or not, but after all I don't know how the Devs are coordinating this Project.

Is there a chance to get some short official info in either issue? Would be nice.

we have official answer alreayd. they said it will be using toh's flight model in the final retail version, and the alpha is going to be soldier centric, and the beta will be vehicle centric. unfortunately proper flight model will not be available until final product.

thx johncage I saw it just now.
with that as a fact, nobody cares, how many votes those issues are getting, right?

Flying upside down is now no longer possible (as of the latest dev build) and loops/corkscrews are significantly more difficult to do.

"bind a button to 'pull up'
take control over a A9 Helicopter
hover at 45m altitude
press and hold 'pull up'
-> you will not touch the ground"

Tried that... Crashed and Burned...

"Flying upside down is now no longer possible (as of the latest dev build) and loops/corkscrews are significantly more difficult to do."

Guess it explains why.

But on a note, I wouldn't want to change much on flying a heli. The controls are fine and it controls great. I use a keyboard to fly, I dont have a joystick, so I would prefer the controls and feel to remain the same.

However as for unrealistic traits such as flying upside down and doing loops, I would agree would need fixing.

As far as I've read BI would LIKE to include TOH, but said that it is a great investment in time to incorporate it. Dunno if it has been easier since that University student who works on simulators has talked to them (If they have talked), but I don't think BI has confirmed that it will be in release.

Shouldn't only designated pilots be able to fly a helicopter? The average infantry can't fly helicopters or airplanes.

"Shouldn't only designated pilots be able to fly a helicopter? The average infantry can't fly helicopters or airplanes."

I agree with this. I have seen some MP missions like domination where your role depends greatly on your skills and gear. For example if you are an MG gunner you can not use a sniper rifle because you aren't trained for it, or you cant fly a heli because youren't trained for it. So you would have to choose the appropriate gear for your class and skill.

However I do wish that stock ARMA was like that, having some emphasis on classes and skills, so that if I am a sniper marksman I may be able to pickup an LMG but due to poor skill I wouldn't be able to be very effective with it. Because I noticed, I still can for the most part be a jack of all trades in most cases duting solo and MP games.

This ticket is now partially obsolete, and the rest is still covered by #2192, which has more votes and has been reviewed and assigned by a dev. Therefore, closing this one as duplicate.
