Fired of a couple of mags against a group of rifle men standing idle on the runway from the nearest hill (about 300 meter away?) AI troops went prone on the tarmac and fired away some rounds in my direction. There was a hangar and other options to get out of the line of fire but didn't seek any cover.

Additional Information

Would be nice if the AI was a bit more aware of the environment.

first reaction is to go prone and make yourself a smaller, harder to hit target when you take fire. That is almost a rule i think, but it works regardless. The AI is programmed for that.

I would say ducking for cover would only be priority if it is less than 5 meters away, more than that and you are just too exposed for anyone who is a good shot. I go by a 3 step rule, duck for cover every 3 steps, and repeat till you get to decent cover.

A good example of watching them take cover, put yourself in the tower on top of the hill between the airport and Agia Marina. Put a few units at the Southern point of Agia Marina and waypoint them to walk towards the airport down that western road. If you start shooting at them almost everytime I've seen them run for some sort of cover, usually it's behind a building where only 1/2 of their body is sticking out so they'll still try to shoot at you.

BUT you're right too. They will go prone, which is ineffective against a sniper on high ground while they're in the middle of the road.

In flat terrain and no cover available situations, attacked men should deploy smoke grenades and break contact. Lying in the open won't do them any good.
