A minor seeming change that came with v1.5, but there are a couple of problems I see with nametags in their new iteration:
Obstructive and lack of clarity.
- The additional icon in the nametag is causing these to take up a bit too much real estate in the 3D world; with many players around, these are reducing the clarity of what's going on around me and in cases where fighting is very close quarters, particularly around trees and bushes, I have been finding it really difficult to spot the figures of players. Which is bad, as these figures will often also be the people trying to kill me.
- This gets particularly bad when there are squaddies nearby and their nametags are appearing through all objects, obstructing visibility on enemies between squaddies and I. This "QoL" change (I assume) is having a negative affect on QoL and providing too much information.
Detrimental to emergent CQB gameplay.
- 1.4 was great for finally adding chaos and fog of war for infantry in CQB. It really slowed the CQB gameplay down considerably and rewarded communicative teams, sneaky infiltrators. It created microcosms of emergent gameplay between players who needed to communicate with unknown players to identify and confirm that identity.
- The return of nametag through all objects for squad members I think is a detriment, offering a convenience or QOL that speeds up the decision making process in CQB, only resulting in more run n gun gameplay in these scenarios.
- The fog of war is a massive benefit in a game like this and really well simulates the chaos of such CQB; offering the players speedy resolutions to this chaos that require zero communication and interactive gameplay is not a QOL decision that should be made I think.
- Those heart-pounding moments clearing a building at the end of a messy gunfight where all sense and communication has gone awry only to find out it's your squadmate - AMAZING gameplay. This undoes that, and offers no amazing gameplay in return I believe; just fast track convenience which undermines some great, emergent gameplay that we've been enjoying since v1.4.
Solutions?
- Restore visibility rules of names to how they are in v1.4
- Remove the icons contained in nametags
NOTE
I believe nametags may have some kind of text opacity based on distance in v1.4 too. This is no longer the case? This kind of thing is resulting in the clutter of the 3D space in busy areas, which is preventing the player from being able to see things around them due to obstruction.
Let me know if you chaps agree.
