[1.2.0.124] {AI} {Driving} The driving AI is magically aware of distant AT Mines and plots its route to avoid them
Awaiting internal Testing, NormalPublic

Description

Game Version number: 1.2.0.124
Modded?: No

Issue Description:
When planning a route to its destination, an AI driver can magically sense the existence of player-placed AT Mines blocking a particular road, whether they are placed before or after it has started moving, and will immediately pick a different route even if takes them kms out of their way and involves reversing and going over a mountain range.

Steps To Reproduce

Scenario: a CONVOY is travelling from REGINA to LEVIE. the players have access to AT MINES.

  1. Place the convoy at REGINA
  2. Block off the road to the LEVIE MILITARY SITE with a roadblock, otherwise the AI will take this route (because it's shorter) and for scenario reasons we want them to take the COAST ROAD. Note that this is another example of the AI magically knowing about obstructions in their path, but in this case it's a desired outcome.
  3. Give the CONVOY a waypoint in LEVIE
  4. Observe the CONVOY travel north down the COAST ROAD, turn east at the CROSSROADS , and proceed to LEVIE

NOW, repeat the above steps, but before Step 3, spawn a Sapper and an Explosives Crate. Control the Sapper and place TWO AT MINES at the CROSSROADS near LEVIE (see second video for placement). Delete the Sapper and the Explosives Crate.

IMPORTANT: these must be player-placed mines, not GM SYSTEM-menu mines, although the "player" can be the GM. The driving AI DOES NOT sense the placement of GM SYSTEM mines.
  • Again, give the CONVOY the order to drive to LEVIE. Nothing has changed, except that now there are MINES in the route they previously drove.
  • Observe the CONVOY immediately do a 180 degree turn and drive back south through REGINA to take the mountain pass to DURASS In order to avoid the AT MINES at the CROSSROADS which they magically can detect although they were placed out of line of sight over 2.5km away from their starting position.
Additional Information

Here's the scenario without any mines. The convoy successfully drives north along the Coast Road and turns right at the Crossroads to reach Levie.

The exact same scenario, except the Crossroads have been mined. Instead of driving north, the Convoy does a U turn and travels South, crosses the pass, and goes to Levie via the Green Valley road.

On further investigation, it turns out that even if the mines are placed AFTER the convoy has started travelling up the NORTH coast road (but still miles out of visual range), it will detect them as soon as they are laid and do an immediate U-turn to take the alternative route SOUTH over the mountain range.

Hello speedwaystar.
Can you reproduce this every time or was this just a random occurrence?

I was able to reproduce this consistently. the AI would *never* drive towards the road blocked by mines, it would always pick another route.

Thank you, can you please share your save with us?

no mines. convoy drives north, turns east, arrives at levie.

mines placed (manually, see video). convoy drives south to avoid them.

In 1.2.1.66 Experimental, the AI will drive over the mine and be destroyed, instead of going over the pass into Green Valley.

HOWEVER, they will take a DIFFERENT route to the mine if it is present.

If NO MINE is present on their route, the AI will drive from REGINA down the main road to the crossroads near LEVIE to their doom.

If MINES ARE present on their ruite, the AI will instead turn left onto the dirt track near REGINA, drive along it until it meets the main road, and continue to the crossroads near LEVIE to their doom.

This behaviour, while superior to the status quo ante where they would simply plot an entirely different route to avoid the mines, is puzzling and not ideal.

It makes designing a mission where the convoy is supposed to travel on an expected route to its destination difficult due to the unreliability of the route pathing AI.
