When shoot an improved bolt (the one with feathers) using the crossbow to a tree, it appears nailed to the tree in the opposite direction, pointing towards where it was shot. Tested in official DE 1PP Experimental Server (cannot remember the code, but the only one which is 1PP).

Haven't tested the plain bolt (the one without feathers) or the metal bolt.

Haven't tested in any other surface other than trees.
