When I see another player, I run up to them and then the game will freeze and an error message will pop up, prompting me to close click "OK" and then the game closes itself. I experience this crash when playing on Public Servers.

Ok, I'll try that. And I forgot to save a screenshot of the error message (I'll take a screenshot and post it here next time I encounter it if verifying the game files doesn't work)
And I don't think so. I haven't played DayZ since sometime during 0.63 EXP and then switched over from the 'beta' in the game's Steam properties, and then launched the game and that's the first time it happened.

This may now be fixed in the new update on Experimental! It is possible it will also release onto Stable branch tomorrow.
