Hit decal variation on armored/metal vehicles
New, NormalPublic

Description

The current vehicle/object hit-decal system in ArmA 3 could use some polishing before/with release of Tanks DLC.

There is no variation in effect style, it is all a faded blob. We are on the brink of seeing more vehicular combat in ArmA, and as such I think it is important to have good visual feedback to the effectiveness of your anti-armor weapons.

I suggest the following be considered:

  1. Higher quality armor penetrating hit decals (with bump-mapping for sense of depth).
  2. Higher quality armor non-penetrating hit decals (also bump-mapping).
  3. New explosive impact hit decals for all objects/vehicles (burnt/soot effect).

4. If HEAT ammunition is implemented with Tanks DLC, a custom HEAT impact effect (hole with fragments scattered around it)

In general, tanks have a low fire-rate and produce a lot less decals for the engine to worry about, so bringing up the decal limit, lifetime and quality should hopefully not impact performance greatly.

See parent task for other suggestions.

Steps To Reproduce

Fire at an armored vehicle with any caliber projectile weapon.

Witness the decal appear as a faded-brush (sphere) effect, varying with caliber size.

Effect is same whether or not the projectile penetrates the armor.

Also, high explosive ammunition (missiles, rockets, bombs, shells) leave no hit decal.
