Borderless Window Stutter
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Why does this cause crazy stutter when before 0.60, borderless was fine.. runs really smooth in full screen.

Is it the new renderer? Is it my GPU drivers? Im lost on this one, tried all sorts of tweaks.

I have 6700K + Asus Pro Gaming + Dominator Platinum 3200Mhz DDR4 RAM + RX 480 GPU on Samsung SSD's..

I really dont think its my system :)

Hello MyBraiNs and thank you for the report.
Are you running the game with any startup parameters? If so, try to remove them as we do not support them and they cause various in game issues. Also, can you try to delete contents of C:\Users\*username*\Documents\DayZ (make sure to make a backup as deleting these will reset all your in game settings to default), run the game and let us know whether the issue still persists? Please attach dxdiag file from your computer to this ticket if the issue will persist.
Regards,
Geez

So i have found out the cause of my stutter, its basically because i run more than 1 monitor (i have 3 monitors in total). Also the configuration of how i run them makes no difference, this includes running 2 from my RX 480, 1 from the 480 with the other 1 or 2 from my 6700K's iGPU. Running just 1 monitor directly from the 480 and playing Dayz in Borderless Window Mode runs with the same smoothness as Full Screen without stutter.

I have to mention that i dont get this with ANY other game, i even run Arma 3 in Borderless while my other monitors do other tasks and i dont get stutter.. it is just Dayz that im getting this stutter. I have tried pretty much every GPU driver config and done the above you have asked me to do before you even posted :)

This has to be something to do with how Dayz's new renderer runs on Windows (10). Considering i (and most other streamers) cant stream Dayz in Full Screen while using Antialiasing, then something is up with Dayz and its new DX11 API.

I hope you guys can find a fix for this issue soon as its very frustrating to deal with while streaming.

Thanks.

Hello MyBraiNs.
Internally we also run several dual monitor setups, however we are not experiencing the issue you are describing. Does this issue occur to you as well in the standard windowed mode when it is maximised? Are your graphic drivers up to date? And could you provide us with the dxdiag file as i have mentioned previously?
Regards,
Geez

Yes i get it in any sort of Window Mode.. i also have the latest GPU drivers and have tried recent drivers that support my RX 480. I have even tried the Borderless Window Gaming app too.

Do you want ALL of the text file and want me to post it here? It seems like a lot of text to be posting :)

Also, why cant i run Antialiasing in Game Capture Mode in OBS? It gives me a black screen. Is this something that is going to be fixed in the near future?

Thanks.

Hello MyBraiNs.
The issue with OBS is known and has been reported here https://feedback.bistudio.com/T120152. As for the dxdiag, you can post the file in here, there is an upload button on the comment section bar. Also, do your screens have different refresh rates on them (if possible, write them down here)? And if you havent already, could you please check if the issue persists even on different graphic settings in game?(different texture quality, vsync on/off etc).
Regards,
Geez

Hi Geez..

I've also tried switching between difference refresh rates, all combo's with no joy. Tried every game graphics combo too. It can start off feeling smooth and then it seems like say, smooth running through the woods and then entering a town, the stutter starts again.. its kinda like when new textures are coming into view.. thats when it starts.. is it something to do with texture caching maybe? I've tried different options for that in the AMD drivers aswell.

Maybe a windows 10 update has messed things up.. im so lost at this point, i usually figure these issues out myself but this one doesnt want to be fixed.

Hope that file gives something up..

Thanks.

Hello MyBraiNs.
Could you try to disable all the programs running in background, leaving only the necessary things on and then try to run the game?

Geez

Hi again Geez..

Tried that.. before you mentioned it and again today. Seems like i've tried everything i know and im pretty nerdy with PC tech stuff. I'll speak to a guy i know at AMD to see if theres a driver issue here, i feel like i'm spending more time trying to fix this issue than actually playing the game.

It can run smooth for a while and then it just feels like someone is turning stutter on and off while i'm playing, so it isnt constant, just random.

For now i'll just stick to streaming with game cap and no AA until this gets fixed.

Thanks for trying to help out.

Will do Geez..

By the way is there any chance of the Render Resolution in the Video settings being fixed? At least then we can up the scale in the DayZ settings to 133% (thats 1440p on a 1080p monitor) to deal with most of the jaggies, which for me the jaggies (because we cant use AA in Game Cap) are as big an issue as the Window Mode problem.

Before you suggest doing it in GPU driver settings, i have tried that already (AMD VSR) but it seems to mess up my other displays.

Thanks.

Hello MyBraiNs.
The render resolution feature is currently work in progress and it should be adjustable in the future.
Regards,
Geez

Is that near future or.. ?

So Geez, i may have fixed this.. its been a while since i have used RadeonPro, which isnt updated anymore but still has good options to be made use of.

After some tinkering around with RadeonPro i have found that setting Vsync to 'Dynamic' with Triple Buffering enabled and forced Refresh Rate of 60Hz has pretty much eliminated my stuttering, though i seem to have a very small amount of input lag but it isnt all that noticeable, or maybe its just some sort of placebo effect.

FYI, Dynamic Vsync is AMD's version of Nvidia's Adaptive Vsync afaik.

Anyway here is a screenshot for those settings..

There wasnt a problem with pre 0.60 builds so i'm thinking that maybe something is not working right with Vsync (at least for AMD/multi monitor setups) in the latest DayZ build, worth looking into i guess.. lets hope a solution is found as using third party programs isnt something that every DayZ player will think about if they end up with this issue.

This will do me.. for now. As i get to run borderless mode and stream AND use Antialiasing.. all at the same time. :)

Thank you for your time..

MyBraiNs.

Hello MyBraiNs.
Thank you very much for the information, we are going to look into the issue and possibly fix it in the future stages of development.

Geez

@Geez, just a quick update on this issue, i have a FreeSync monitor now which uses 48-75hz FreeSync range. I was hoping this might fix my stuttering in Borderless Mode but there is no improvement. Full Screen seems smoother than ever, also Arma 3 is so smooth now (Full Screen or Full Screen Borderless) that i can even push up the settings more now with FreeSync enabled.

This must be something that needs fixing internally as i dont have this type of issue with any other game i own. Maybe how it runs on multiple monitor setups, or even Windows 10. Im hoping the new upcoming Windows 10 'Game Mode' update might fix this. I just dont know anymore, its isnt like a constant stutter but more like intermittent stuttering when a fresh scene of the map or a new set of trees come into view, or just fresh textures coming into view. Hopefully the new cosmetic textures in 0.62 may help.

Its a weird one for sure as i never had this problem before 0.60.
