I crafted multiple fireplaces on UK-09, after a few seconds they would vanish. Including ones placed on the ground as well as placed in a houses fireplace.
Lighting didn't appear to be possible, although the option came up and the animation played out - the fireplace was gone.

Place a fireplace on ground on exp uk-09 and it will likely disappear, granted I haven't tried all surfaces
Additional Information
I was playing on what I believe was this patch a few days ago and there didn't appear to be any problem with the fireplaces then - that server would have been UK-05, and placed on a different surface.
