I picked up a pair of boots at a guardhouse in Berezino in order to move them out of the way to see what was underneath them. After the boots were placed in my backpack, I found it impossible to drop them. I tried dragging them off to the side of the screen but the boots remained in my backpack.

While the boots were in my backpack, I noticed if I right clicked on them the menu included the option to "Take" them. Selecting this option appeared to do nothing.

Later, when trying to pick up cans of food and drink by double-clicking them, I noticed they seemed to disappear because I could not find them anywhere in my inventory.

Finally, after about 10 or 15 minutes (or maybe more, I'm not certain) I returned to my inventory and noticed that the boots had disappeared. In their place were the cans of food and drink that I had picked up earlier.
