I had a spare field jacket in my inventory and after a while my main inventory filled up but I noticed I was able to still pick up items. I wondered where they went and I dropped the jacket to make room after the jacket filled up and all my stuff was in there.

Yep I have noticed this bug. You can store items within items and so on as long as there is room.
