I have changed Steam nicknames about 3 times and have not experienced this.

I think this issue may be server side. Was experiencing it yesterday and found I just had to wait 30-45 seconds for the item to show up in my vicinity. If this isn't server side I recommend putting ammo cans, med kits and things of those sort in your hands to check their contents.
