These weapons are supposed to be crap, and a last-ditch effort. How long were you fighting the zombie? Where you hitting it in the head? Only an axe kills in a few hits, a pipe wrench takes 15-20 hits at the very least to kill a zombie.
So not really a bug.

You can tear your t-shirt into rags, which act as bandages. Actual proper bandages are supposed to be valuable.
