Yep, With the flare, the light completely disappeared leaving only the particles. It seems the issue (or even feature) with flashlights/head torches is that the light is very bright in plain view but goes very dim when zoomed in. Thanks for the reply.
The light source we encountered this issue with was the road flare. We only saw one light source at the time and were trying to scope it out and gather more information but we ran into this problem. I would say we were ~200 metres from the flare. I didn't manage to get a video at the time unfortunately, but, if I encounter this again I will try and record it.
