Sometimes, you will hear zed aggro noises (growling, howling, grunting) at random. It sounds like they're chasing you and can be alarming.

Unable to reproduce consistently, however, it never starts before encountering a zed.
I believe there are two sources of this:
- Aggroing a zombie and a bit of bad luck. You'll either get away or kill them, but, your client is still flagged as having a zombie chase, so it will continue to play the noises.
- Global, at random. I've had friends playing with me and we'll both hear the same exact noise despite having no zeds in the area.
Event Timeline
This is due to what wildlife is in game (rabbits and birds). The wildlife makes the noises. The Dev team acknowledges this and has put the blame on lack of a sound designer. They have recently recruited one and have stated it's one of the first non-game breaking bugs they will fix. If you read the actual Dev blog on the official DayZ website you would know this.
After reporting the issue I paid more attention to the behavior of this glitch and I think sYs is right. The intensity of the zombie sounds will change as I move around and do stuff. The sounds will disappear if I sprint long distances, but they will eventually catch up. It really does seem like the zombie is directly under me, clipping the ground.
I found myself sometimes log in into a field and i hear zombie sounds. Almost makes it feel like zombies are under the terrain. I have found that - when you encounter a zombies and you kill all zombies on sight - the chances of the zombie sound bug happening are close to 0.
