I spawned during night time on an island, and began to swim across the sea toward the mainland. As I ducked underneath the water, the world suddenly became light.
Once my character raised his head to breathe, it became dark again. It seems that being underwater changes the environment to daylight.

-Join a server during night time
-Go to the sea (untested on lakes, but probably works there too)
-Enter first person mode
-Begin swimming, wait for your character to bob underwater
-Observe glorious daylight
-Only seems applicable in first person mode, not third person (tested both)
