Zombies are aggroed from extremely far away.
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Im new to the world of DayZ, but imo, Zombies are aggroed from MAJOR distances. Sometimes I can see a zombie way off, like, barely able to see it, and it will start running towards me. As a result, it makes it very difficult and frustrating to sneak in and go into buildings looking for loot etc knowing there'll be that zombie from a mile away making his way to you. Add to the fact that they can pass through most surfaces at the moment - they're like terminators. lol.

If you can see them, they can smell you. Serious note, I have noticed this as well, what is odd about the AI behavior though is sometimes a close infected will pay no attention to you but one 50-100m away will take off toward you full tilt.

I have tried to replicate to see if a certain character model of infected is more prone to this or not but so far it is random on which infected ignore you close and which ones take off from afar to eat dinner.. your face.

Yeh, it does seem to be a bit "random" in the way it works. I was standing right next to one a minute ago, and it didnt bat an eyelid. But yet ones miles away will run at you double time.

can confirm, detection range for zombies is way too high and also they seem to detect you when they have no direct line of sight, like being 2 houses away.

these sometimes very far and you go after you

I have also noticed this. I'm not sure if its so much a bug as to a couple factors including line of sight and noise created, I'm assuming the Z's view range is like how a headlight projects light very narrow to really wide the farther away. Also it does seem u can sneak right up to one if u keep out of there LOS and not make to much noise, and if your in a house and not moving and they come they prob saw u threw the window I've noticed I've been spotted a couple times that way. I'm not sure though since they can move threw wall at the moment can they see threw them too so u cant lose LOS unless u get out of there view range. And the Biggest factor remember its a simulator survival game not at all suppose to be easy at all the more real the better

Seems like it could be both, so I don't see the issue, "guest."

This is definitely something that needs to be worked on. Combining this with the "zeds can phase through walls" glitch and the game actually becomes annoying. Obviously this is still alpha, but it's a legitimate annoyance. I am unable to actually attempt to stealth around zombies in a town and be sneaky and pat myself on the back for getting in and out of a situation without triggering a zombie if the game doesn't act realistically to those movements.

My imagining for the game is that part of the experience in zombie survival is deciding exactly how to handle the undead. "Should I just kill this one zombie with my axe? Or might that trigger those two other zeds to attack as well?" "Maybe I should try to stealth into that cabin and then head out the back and circle around." "I could head into this building and pop that zed in the face; when the other three come over from the sound of the gunshot I can go out the side entrance and down this alley and avoid them." This should be how the game works, I feel. Survival and tactics to "beat" the undead. At the moment in this build it's more "I'll just walk toward this barn- oh look two zombies randomly running after me from three blocks away."

Sorry guest, this is a bug, whatever which way you look at it. Zombies can see you from too far away - fact. If I have to look down my scope to "see" a zombie, but yet this one has already seen me (with his, I'm guessing, deteriorated eye sight from being dead and all) and started running at me - there's a bug there.

Gotta love it when a 'guest' takes it upon themselves to moderate a forum. Good job.

Sometimes you can run next to them and they don't care. But sometimes they follow you from 3km away :D

Thanks for the feedback, however this has already been reported.
