This is just some feedback, i think it would be better if, after you eat/drink that the item stays in the hand, so you can continue to eat/drink without the need to put the item back in the hand again. Which i think can get pretty annoying if you are very hungry and need to eat a lot.

I agree. After picking an item from the ground or from your inventory it should remain on your hand unless you manually switch to another item with your mouse or the hotbar. For canned food, for example, it requires you to put the item four times on your hand before you manage to eat it all.
