On the whole, the audible range of guns seems to be a tad too low considering how quiet the game is on the whole. Even away from the coast, in a quiet part of land, the gunshots sound very underwhelming when someone else shoots nearby.

Yeah, gunshots are too quiet. In Arma 2 they were deafening and it were so cool and realistic. I hope that sound will be corrected
I would like them to be like in the ACE mod.
The 50cal sounded really terrifying (super loud).
As far as I know are the weapon sound already new. The only thing that is missing is the right volume.
I have the oppesite problem with the M4 Silencer, with the Silencer 556 attached it won't reduce the sound noise.
DId some testing with the Mosin. Testing was conducted within 2 meters of my friend, fired ran 10 meters (Distance approx)then fired. Repeated this process until the report of the gun was silent. When report fell silence i paced off the distance wich came out to 59 player steps used with walking speed.
Also fired over friends head into wall at 100 meters and no sound.

In reality you need subsonic ammunition, otherwise only the explosion sound is silenced but the bullet still makes a supersonic crack and that is rather loud.
So maybe it is not implemented yet, or it is just a bug.

But nonetheless DayZ with a huge sound overhaul would be good.
