Upon my character being killed I quit to menu and then the game. When a few hours later I decided to play again my character was back alive in the place it died.

What I think happened was that you left before being synced with the hive.
Some time during development it changed so that it forces a hive update upon leaving the server and all unconscious people are killed.
Has this happened to you in the latest patches?
