Weapon sights incorrect stated magnification
New, WishlistPublic

Description

The stated magnification for the majority of the optics in Arma 3 does not seem to correspond with the actual magnification. For example, the 10x RCO has a magnification level equal to that of the 1-6x MRCO, but it's nowhere near the also 10x AMS.

Additionally, the Nightstalker states it's a 5-25x sight, but it will not magnify beyond what it says is 15x. {F25794}

Steps To Reproduce

Equip a primary weapon with any sight, note it's stated magnification, and compare it to others (take a screen shot and measure an object's height in pixels using MSpaint, for example).

Additional Information

In the image I compared the RCO against the MRCO and the AMS at it's low and high magnification settings, but this issue affects pretty much every sight except the ACOs and Mk17 HWS.

Can confirm, almost all of the magnifications stated in the item descriptions are off, when you look at the config values and / or the actual magnification ingame.

Confirming, i've always been suspicious about the stated magnification levels..

+1

Also, it's funny, I was just on my way here to check if this had been reported after updating my sights guide.

Hi Issen!

RCO now says 2x.. I thought its 4x ingame?
Atleast the real life counterpart Leupold Mark 4 HAMR is 4x.

Confirmed here too, the magnification (mis)information seems to have changed in a recent patch. RCO and MRCO at least are both wrong, could be others.

We seriously need some clarity on this, fix the in-game values and stop the confusion.

Uploaded my test mission used for issue #9173.
Unzip file and preview mission in the editor. The current magnification is reported on screen relative to naked eye (soldier default or ironsights view, zoomed in). This is apparently the reference BIS currently use for personal optics (vehicle apparently use a different reference).
Open BIS arsenal using radio trigger 0, or dig through the crates to change scopes.

Summary:

  • BI's apparent goal was for the UI to state 2/3 of the actual magnification for all scopes. Most are within 10% of this goal, which is reasonable for a UI. I'm not sure of why they use 2/3s though.
  • Nightstalker, NVS and TWS are very inconsistent with the other scopes, with artificially high magnification reported in the UI relative to actual abilities, when compared to other scopes.
  • Mk17 should not report magnification, as it is just a collimator sight and provides no benefit over naked eyes.
