When unit wears nv goggles during the day, they are by default in the "off" position and are visibly on head of characters walking around. However when the same units are inside a vehicle the nv goggles are visibly missing from the head of characters. If NV goggles are turned on, they become visible.

Same occurs when units are parachuting mid air. Once units land the nv goggles become visible again.
