Arma 3 HDR sound reduces volume of other system sound sources
Closed, ResolvedPublic

In Arma 3, creating a loud noise (eg firing a rifle) will temporarily reduce the volume of other sound sources in the game (such as an engine noise). This HDR system for sounds carries over from previous BI titles (OFP).

The problem is this effect is extended beyond Arma 3 and also affects other sound sources currently being used on the system.

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Load any program that makes constant sound, eg play some music in Winamp or web browser.
  2. Load Arma3 Alpha in windowed mode.
  3. In Arma3, shoot weapon. Notice other sound source has it's volume reduced for 0.5 seconds in the same manner as game sound sources (eg engines).
Additional Information

I have tested for the same issue in both OFP:R and Arma2:OA, and neither of these titles have the same problem.

Relevant system specs:
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatality (PCI)

Seems to be hardware specific?

I have tested for this on my laptop and have not been able to reproduce:

Relevant system specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Samsung NP550P5C-S02AU (

Are you sure it isn't windows 7 auto-volume leveling feature ?

  1. Right click on sound icon (windows one, not driver one)
  2. Go to playback devices
  3. Move to Communications tab
  4. Select "Do nothing" from the available options
  5. Test again

Windows 7 communications leveling is already set to do nothing.
Also, as mentioned it only happens in Arma 3.
