integrated auto addon download function
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

such function would be really great for ArmA3, if the game server has this function active
the clients would only download missing addons/modfolders which required for playing the current mission

certainley the server admin could adjust the bandwith for this function in the server.cfg or he can disable it and other traffic has priority

Would cause insane lag for those who are playing while someone is downloading the mod (it lags like hell already with only mission file download..)

I agree with Kid18120, the serverload will be horrible. Even thought of addons like ACE3 or something like J.S.R.S. how long should the client be waiting until download is finished?

This feature, even when it's a good idea, would be terrible for server hosters.

However, since we already have a global addon supplier (SixUpdater / Play with Six), this could be integrated. And since the current serverbowser can already see which mods are required, optional and available (either by server and by mission), this shouldn't be too hard to do.

Example:

  • client joins a server with mods enabled
  • client recieves message about missing mods (both required and optional)
  • client selects the mods to download/install or cancels
  • when ready, client automaticly rejoins the server

The downloads are provided by a thirdparty to offload the gameserver. In case of private mods, the files must be available and linked at a special config file (eg. server-addons.cfg)
