Windows desktop becomes unresponsive after exiting game under some conditions

Description

After quitting the game, my taskbar and browser becomes unresponsive forcing a restart by using the reset button. However this does not happen if I alt-tab sometime during the game before quitting {F16768}

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Start game
  2. Exit game
  3. Desktop is unresponsive

(note: alt-tabbing before quitting prevents this from happening)

How is this issue coming along? This is driving me crazy.
Tried:

  1. Reinstalling the game
  2. Upping my virtual memory allocation
  3. Reinstalling latest nvidia drivers and older ones
  4. Verify game cache via steam

I believe the problem started AFTER opting into dev build then opting out.

If I cntr-alt-del and click once it fixes itself.

It only happens if I enter multiplayer and than exit. If I just boot the game up and then exit from the title screen immediately the issue does not occur.

windows 7-64bit
i7 quad @ 3.6 (all cores unparked)
8 gigs ram
660ti
