[Steam Alpha] A3 crashes display driver
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

So far this has happened to me twice. Both times I was running around on my own on the Stratis Air Base landing strip, occasionally shooting and changing stances.

Suddenly screen went blank for a few seconds then came back online with a notification that my display driver crashed and game errored out with "D3D Error - DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED".

I haven't had any driver crashes before in any other game, including ARMA 2.

OK, I can now reliably and always reproduce this.

I have tracked the issue down to having antialiasing set to 8x. Other antialiasing values do not cause the crash. The only other video options that seem to have any effect are Objects Quality and Terrain Quality.

Since the first 2 crashes I have updated from Catalyst 12.6 to 13.1.

  1. Set Antialiasing to 8x, Objects Quality and Terrain Quality to Standard
  2. Load into this mission: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/34730455/a3/crash_mission.zip
  3. Zoom using the right-mouse button
  4. Display driver crashes

Whether I have Fraps loaded or not makes no difference. I've also tried both windowed and fullscreen mode, no difference either.

My video settings as of the last crash:

Basic

*View*
Display Mode: Window
Resolution: 1280x800

*Antialiasing*
Antialiasing: 8x

Shadow Quality: Disabled
Particles Quality: Standard

I can also confirm this. I've been crashing once every 10-20 minutes or so, and I just saw Deadfast's post about antialiasing. I turned it down from 8x to 4x, and have been crash-free ever since. However, it doesn't happen just when I'm zooming in, but seemingly randomly. I monitored GPU temperatures and they never exceeded 62 degrees celsius. I'm using a Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB OC with the Catalyst 13.1 drivers.

I don't necessarily have to zoom in either, it's just a sure way of reproducing it immediately.
