Since the experimental update 1.28 I have seen items in my inventory that show like they are pristine in the image representing that object in inventory. If you drag that object to your hand it shows the correct status. I have seen this with several objects. So you'd see a pristine looking knife in your inventory and drag it to your hands and then it'd look badly damaged for instance.
