Request for Revamp of Radio Communication and Squad Structure in Arma Reforger
Feedback, NormalPublic

Description

The current system in Arma Reforger allows for unlimited, custom-named squads, creating chaotic communication and unnecessary learning curves for every match. Additionally, the current 6-man "squads" are more akin to fire teams rather than proper military squads.

Proposed Changes:
Enforce Military-Based Squad Structure
Reflect real-world platoon organization:

Platoon Size: 3 squads, each with 3 fire teams (4-man each), plus a squad leader and second-in-command (total 14-man squads).
Predefined Call Signs: Standardized naming for squads and fire teams to ensure clear communication.
Restrict Radio Usage
Radios should be limited to the chain of command:

Platoon HQ: Commander, Sergeant, and support roles (e.g., medics, engineers).
Squads: Squad leaders, fire team leaders, and designated roles only.
Example Platoon Structure:
Alfa Platoon

Alfa 6: Platoon HQ Commander
Alfa 7: Platoon Sergeant
Alfa 4/5: Special roles (e.g., medic, ammo bearer, engineer)
Alfa 1: 1st Squad

Alfa 1-6: Squad Leader
Alfa 1-5: Second-in-Command
Alfa 1-1: 1st Fire Team Leader
Alfa 1-2: 2nd Fire Team Leader
Alfa 1-3: 3rd Fire Team Leader
Alfa 1-4: Special role (e.g., breaching/scouting)
Alfa 2: 2nd Squad (follows the same structure as Alfa 1).

Proposal for Revamped Radio Communication System

Introduce a structured radio messaging system to ensure proper etiquette and clarity:

Message Template and Wheel Selection

  • When a player initiates communication, a template or selection wheel appears.
  • The player (e.g., Alfa 1-1) selects the recipient (e.g., Alfa 1-6), and the game automatically sends: "Alfa 1-6, this is Alfa 1-1, request message, over."

Message Handling

  • The recipient (Alfa 1-6) gets a pop-up to accept, reject, or ignore the message (auto-dismisses after a set time).
  • If accepted, the game responds: "Alfa 1-1, this is Alfa 1-6, send message."

Automated Callsigns and Responses

  • During communication, callsigns are auto-inserted: "Alfa 1-6, 1-1: [player's recorded message]."
  • After recording, the game prompts the sender to choose:
    • OVER: Conversation continues; all parties are prompted to reply.
    • OUT: Ends the conversation.
    • BREAK: Allows continuation of the message after reactivating the radio.

This system enhances clarity, enforces communication discipline, and streamlines radio operations.

Proposal for Single-Channel Radio and Chain of Command Enforcement

To improve communication discipline and enhance realism, I propose the following changes:

Single-Channel Radio System

  • Remove dual-channel and platoon-wide radio functionality.
  • Enforce communication to be addressed specifically (e.g., "Alfa 1-6, this is Alfa 1-1, over").

Restrict Radio Access to Chain of Command

  • Only the chain of command (Platoon HQ, squad leaders, fireteam leaders, and designated roles) should have access to radios.
  • This prevents unnecessary chatter and ensures communication follows proper hierarchy.

Rationale:
The current platoon-wide radio allows players to broadcast freely, making other communication mechanics redundant. Enforcing single-channel radios and limiting access to leadership will restore structure, improve immersion, and encourage proper tactical coordination. Also, players that don't follow their leaders will be stranded, not knowing anything without access to their leader.
