Dropping an item inside of a medium tent will drop it underneath the tent. The only way to get the item back is to empty the tent and pack it up.

Deploy a medium tent (if you can find a place)
Enter the tent and go to the back of it
Drop your items
Observe they are now underneath the tent and cannot be retrieved
