Killed multiple infected and dropped some items in one of them as I had no inventory space. Prepared a fire in a building nearby and went back to grab the items, but that particular infected despawned, while all others remained.
I tested this then on another infected - killed one, put one rag into his inventory, moved away for about one minute and 100 meters and when I returned, that infected also despawned.
I'm using one hour lifetimes for all ruined items including dead infected.
safe-, distance- and cleanupradius all use vanilla values.
