ASVAL & VSS Balancing 1.23
Feedback, NormalPublic

Description

I have seen that you are making some weapon changes that include new weapons as well as location changes. Sadly the ASVAL and VSS are still unplayable. Like many I love the concept, its by far one of the coolest gun options that offers a unique experience and skill requirement to play with. Every time I see one I really want to pick it up and run with it, but most of the time I cant justify doing so and here is why:

  1. The guns were originally implemented with 10 round and 20 round mags on the basis that the armor piercing rounds actually ignored armor giving these weapons insane damage per round. This was later nerfed making these guns behave more like an elite SMG. I agree with that nerf and think the current damage of 75 health is appropriate along with armor durability degrading effect. However the magazine capacity was never rebalanced accordingly! This is the main reason why nobody likes this weapon.. even with the 20 round mag you cannot reliably deal with a pvp encounter with 1 player running a higher capacity gun. Or conflicts that involve zombies and players combines as compared to the absolute insane capacity of KAM-30rnd-75rnd, KA74-30rnd-45rnd & 556 30rnd-60rnd! A good quality fix for this at low development cost so we can actually use these guns more often would be to increase the 10rnd VSS mag to 20rnd, and increase existing 20rnd ASVAL mag to 40rnd, nothing else needs to change here not even the models if it means getting it in. I think the community would all accept this.
  1. Inertia and movement changes in DayZ came after the ASVAL and VSS nerf mentioned above. The 9x39 round is a heavy round (16g) based on realistic data that cannot be changed.. But the 20rnd ASVAL mag weigh 550g Comapred to 556-60rnd (450g)! and the KAM-75rnd (140g)? - Please please reduce the weight of the the mag to 160g to offset some of the punishment of carrying the heavy rounds. Simply putting "polymer" in the tooltip and adjusting the weight would be enough, the community doesn't need any changes to the mag models.
  1. 9x39 vs 9x39AP - Cool idea to have both ammo types originally, but again this was never rebalanced after the nerf and is now just an irritation:

a) The non-AP and AP compete on the loot economy. Its already hard enough to find either of this ammo but when you do, you will rarely find enough to reliably run just one type which is a problem because of the points below.

b) These two rounds have DIFFERENT flight patterns meaning a player has to learn the bullet drop behaviour and zeroing for every scope in the game TWICE because of the low bullet velocity leading to an extremely arched flight pattern between 50m-300m. The huge arched flight pattern makes this gun hard enough to learn to shoot without having to do it all twice because of the two ammo types.

c) Its very a frustrating playing experience, because you need select mags with AP rounds and others with non-AP rounds to ensure that you at least get some level of consistency when shooting in a fight. This then has the problem that In the middle of a fight, reloading with R often results in switching ammo type, which in turn results in your bullet drop being way difference than it was a second ago with the other mag. This problem often results in death.

Summary
The ASVAL and VSS are hard enough to learn to play with slow bullet velocity as it is. The fact that it then has extremely low capacity magazines, extremely heavy magazines and completely inconsistent ammo availability and shooting dynamics makes this gun unplayable for most of the community. Some simple ways to fix this that require minimal development resources:

  1. Change 10rnd VSS mag to 20rnd VSS mag and add "polymer" in the description and reduce weight to 80g. No model changes required
  2. Change 20rnd ASVAL mag to 40rnd ASVAL mag and add "polymer" in the scription and reduce weight to 160g. No model changes required
  3. Remove 9x39 standard rounds from the game and just keep the AP rounds.

Thank you devs for continuing to support what i believe is the greatest game ever made. I hope to play with an improved VSS and ASVAL in 1.23.
