I'm a pretty new player on DayZ and I've just been playing on official servers so far. I've tried playing on some community servers but after I download the mods I need for a particular server the game just freezes up when I try to join.

There are many servers that don't auto update their mods and maybe you got unlucky.

Can you try the following?:
Verify the game data through Steam and delete the configuration files when prompted to do so (make sure Steam cloud sync is disabled for DayZ before doing this) - you can also delete the config files manually by clearing the C:\Users\*username*\Documents\DayZ folder
Open the DayZ launcher
Select PARAMETERS menu
Select ALL PARAMETERS tab
scroll down and check "Bulldozer" parameter
Launch the game
Once launched, close the game
Uncheck bulldozer
Launch the game again without any parameters
