Free base building is one of the greatest additions to Conflict since the game started. It’s very enjoyable and addictive when you get into it, but more importantly, it adds a really interesting extra dimension to the game for both attackers (provides a challenge to capture and hold built up bases that is different each time) and defenders (provides “base defence” mission that is unique in the game).
Some players really like to play the role of “base builder”, but there are some problems that make building large defended bases much more frustrating and time consuming than it should be, to the point that rarely does anyone bother to do it.
- It takes a huge supply effort to build all the base facilities, defensive sandbag walls and fortifications needed for a large base (at least 10-15 supply trips). If a player is doing this alone, then it requires hours of monotonous effort trucking supplies and fighting off ambushes and FIA bots at the supply depots, etc
- Players at the base will spawn vehicles which uses more supplies, so there is a constant need to keep supplies maintained to provide defence of a base that has had so much effort invested in it
- Constant demanding supply requirements mean that it’s only practical to build bases in locations that are within “close” proximity to a supply depot
- The amount of “rank points” earned for delivering supplies is very low. It takes about 8 or 9 supply trips to move up one rank level
- If starting from Private, after about 4 supply trips theres nothing more you can build because Corporal rank is then required to continue building
- Not being able to build a barracks until Corporal rank means supplies get used even quicker by players spawning at the base
- If the enemy captures the base they can destroy the whole built up base in 30 seconds, meaning the entire exercise was a waste of hours of effort - this could easily happen while the base builder is making another critical supply run
So why bother spending the hours of effort it takes to build a large base for the team just to see it all wasted?
Here are a some suggestions that would make base building more rewarding, sustainable and beneficial to everyone’s gameplay:
- Increase the “rank points” earned for running supplies. This not only helps the base builder get access to what they need (e.g. sandbags and bunkers), but encourages other players to help with trucking supplies too
- Reduce the rank needed for Barracks to Private to help reduce supply usage and add some defence ability so that when the base builder is away trucking supplies the base at least has some protection
- Increase the capacity of supply trucks and / or reduce the cost of base building materials. The demand on supplies is now substantially more than it used to be before the base building feature was added, but trucks still only carry 1000 supplies. It’s just too low for all the demand on supply
- Add the functionality of a "base supply perk” which gives a bonus of reduced supply consumption costs at the base. This can be justified as “an economy of scale” for base logistics (e.g. 10% less spawn costs for each facility built at the base)
- If a base is captured by the enemy, then at least give the team who built the base a chance to recapture it by using the “spawn lock” countdown timer to also lock deletion of base objects
If we do these things, then we can make base building great for everyone!
