Poor Performance on AMD GPUs
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

Recently I have upgraded my GPU from a GTX 1080ti to an RX 6800 XT, which is a significantly newer and faster GPU. In Dayz, however, I am seeing significantly worse and less stable performance when using the same settings. This behavior has only been seen in Dayz so far for me, and this seems like a common problem when searching online.

I was testing following the same path and using the same game graphics settings.

Here are my system specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600
  • RAM: 2x8GB (16GB) DDR4 @ 3200MHz CL16
  • Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
  • OS Drive: Samsung 980 1TB NVME M.2 SSD
  • Drive where Dayz is installed: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB 2.5" SSD
  • Old GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC Black
  • New GPU: AsRock RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming OC
  • Monitor: Alienware AW3423DW 3440x1440 @ 175Hz

Following my test path and recording FPS using the MSI Afterburner Benchmark tool, here is the benchmark info:

StatisticGTX 1080 TI (fps)RX 6800 XT (fps)

An update.

As I recently upgraded my CPU since I created this bug report, I re-ran the same benchmarking pass using the same settings.

Here are the results compared to the my previous tests:

Here is the benchmark run from CapFrameX: https://www.capframex.com/sessioncollections/b76187bb-24ed-427f-90c4-523ed1f0ea84

As can be seen from the Sensors tab, average GPU usage was only 52%. This issue is exclusive so far in my experience to DayZ, no other game I've played has suffered any performance regression when updating my GPU.

I've retested again now that 1.21 has released. Still seeing the same issue, and if anything it seems slight worse now. Followed the same process.

My PC specs have changed slightly as well.

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3D
  • RAM: 2x16GB (32GB) DDR4 @ 3600MHz CL18
  • Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
  • OS Drive: Samsung 980 1TB NVME M.2 SSD
  • Drive where Dayz is installed: Installed on OS drive
  • GPU: AsRock RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming OC
  • Monitor: Alienware AW3423DW 3440x1440 @ 175Hz

Game settings are still the same

CapFrameX benchmark: https://www.capframex.com/sessioncollections/d9fd4d82-bc33-483e-9237-fcd7762a4134

GPU usage is still really low and there's noticeable hitching in game

From latest run:

StatisticFPS
Average FPS152.9
Min FPS21.31
Max FPS255.2
1% Low Avg FPS89.1
0.1% Low Avg FPS63.1

Still lower values across the board compared to my old 1080ti
