I've found that this happens when you try to sort the list a second time before the initial sort has finished loading.

  1. In game, go to Multiplayer mode
  1. Sort by ascending ping by clicking once on the Ping header
  1. Before the list refreshes, sort by descending ping by clicking again on the Ping header
