Playing with UNSUNG and liberation mods, but everything was working fine for many hours one night. Now with no setting changes the game crashes when any player turns on a vehicle engine. This also happens in a SP editor mission with a single player and single vehicle.

Yes definitely. Something is going nuts in your ram and corrupting stuff all over the place.
Typical of USB Headset issue (something with windows 10's drivers is bad, we can't fix that).
Try unplugging/not using your USB Headset (USB sound output specifically) it should fix the crashing
