The issue is not only aesthethic, but also gameplay related. Currently M40 is equipped with an Unertl Tactical 10x scope, that utilizes mil-dot reticle. This kind of scope and reticle was introduced in late 1970s/early 1980s for USMC upgraded M40A1 rifle. Mil-dot reticle gives a much more advanced range estimation and bullet-drop compensation solution, than any other sniper scope of the 1960s, with the sole exception of Soviet PSO-1.
While the scope is configured as a variable 3-9x (not fixed 10x), and it's mil-dot reticle is not properly scaled, basic mathemathics behind this kind of reticle can still be applied and any player familiar with the way mil-dot reticle works, will be albe to utilize this advantage to great effect, especially in PvP matches against opponent who's best sniper equipment is an antiquated Mosin with PU scope.
To achieve both a more level field, and a more realistic equipment for US snipers, it would be better to replace current scope on M40, with a Vietnam-era Redfield 3-9x.
