Can confirm this aswell. When a zombie drops loot you have to put it in your hands first before you can add it to your inventory.
Holding square (droping it to ground) also doesn't work.
The only way currently to put loot from zombies in your inventory is by putting it in your hand first.
Tested on multiply community servers.
