Blue Screen on launch / startup
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello,

After switching CPU from an Intel i5 6600K to a Ryzen 3900X, as well as changing motherboard and RAM, I cannot launch Arma 3 anymore as it causes my PC to crash with a blue screen right after hitting "play" on the launcher.

The error code on the blue screen is : "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"

Specs:

  • Ryzen 3900X (not overclocked)
  • 32GB of RAM (4 x 8GB CL15)
  • GTX 1070Ti

What I've tried already:

  • Reinstalling the game
  • Updating all drivers for all hardware
  • Resetting all launcher settings to default
  • Starting without any mods nor DLC
  • Starting game with with -nobenchmark
  • Checking the disk for errors (chkdsk is OK)
  • Checking the RAM for errors (memtest is OK)

Hello.

Thank you for the report. Hmm, could you please try launching steam as admin. Se if that does not help?

Just tried that. Closed Steam, restarted it with right click -> start as admin, then launched Arma 3 from the launcher, it blue screened again.

Though that did give me the idea of not starting through the launcher, or Steam for that matter. I went into the files and launched the game straight from there. It worked. I can start the game both with the 32bits and 64bits executables. Both as admin and as a normal user. While Steam is running both as admin and normal user.

I'm not sure what's causing the issue, but it seems to be something with the launcher and/or something the launcher starts before launching the game. Perhaps BattleEye ?

Yup, it seems to be coming from "arma3battleye.exe" when I launched that, my PC bluescreened after a few seconds. So it seems to be a problem from BattleEye ? Starting the BattleEye service (BEService) in the task manager manually doesn't crash my PC though.

Interesting. We will have a look at it. Were there any logs created when the game bluescreened your compture? If yes please upload them here.

Edit: Most likely it is a BattleEye bug. Please, contact BattleEye here and inform them of the situation.

Thank you. :)

I just fixed the problem, it's indeed a BattleEye bug ! It seems they have a problem with the Windows Driver Verifier and for some reason it was enabled on my system.

According to their FAQ :

When starting my game with BattlEye enabled, my system crashes with a bluescreen (BSOD).
First of all, ensure that Driver Verifier is disabled on your system as it is currently known to cause problems with BE. You can find how to do so here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/244617/using-driver-verifier-to-identify-issues-with-windows-drivers-for-adva. To disable it please clear all of its settings and reboot your system. If the crashes persist please contact our support directly so we can investigate your issue.

I followed this post on TenForums to disable it: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5470-enable-disable-driver-verifier-windows-10-a.html#Part3

And after a reboot, it's now disabled and I can run Arma 3 the normal way and I'm able to join and play online without any issue.

Thanks for the pointer, marking the issue as solved now 😀

EDIT: Actually I don't think I'm able to mark the issue as solved 😁
