Description

Ever since 1.03, I cannot launch DayZ anymore. I've been playing the game on the same rig since 2014, but the game doesn't work anymore.

Every time I try launching the game, I get a "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. I read multiple threads on steam forums, on the feedback trackers and tried pretty much everything I can.

This is everything I tried:

  1. Reinstalled the game.
  2. Ran DayZ_x64.exe and DayZ_BE.exe as administrators.
  3. Ran the game in compatibility mode.
  4. Ran Steam as admin.
  5. Deleted everything Battle Eye related.
  6. Verified integrity of game files.
  7. Took ownership of the DayZ folder and gave all users full control over the DayZ folder.
  8. Moved the game from my SSD to my HDD.
  9. Made sure anything Razer related was uninstalled.
  10. Uninstalled my antivirus and turned off Windows Defender.

Last but not least I did a clean format of my SSD and reinstalled a fresh new Windows 10 Pro x64 edition. On the clean install, I installed DayZ and the problem still occurred.

Run DayZ from steam or the executable every time.

Additional Information

The game manages to launch if I simply run DayZ_x64.exe. However, it launches the game without any mods. When the game is launched via DayZ_BE.exe or the launcher, the error occurs regardless of whether or not I chose to launch with mods or not in the launcher.

Does this error appear in the BattlEye window or does it appear in the standard windows error window?

I managed to fix the issue. If anyone else is experiencing this problem, here's what I did.

  • I did a backup of my important files and folders and completely wiped Windows 10 with an OS installation media and not with the built-in reset option.
  • Make sure you clean the disk on which you want to install your OS with either the command prompt or any other media.
  • Reinstalled Windows 10 on the newly formatted disk.
  • Installed Steam > DayZ SA (before anything else).
  • Launched the game (worked).
  • Loaded my backup onto my machine.

This seemed to fix the error for me! Hopefully it helps anyone else experiencing the same thing!
