The cause of persistence issues.
Assigned, NormalPublic

Description

I believe my friends and I have found, at least, one cause of the persistence issues that plague DayZ servers. I, personally, along with several in-game friends, as well as many other players on many of the various DayZ servers I have played since 0.63 hit stable branch, have had our bases just disappear. At first, it seemed pretty random. The bases would be there for several days in some instances, while in others, a base would disappear on the first reset after establishment. Others have found, however, that their bases have persisted for weeks on end without disappearing while every other player on the server have had their bases despawn. Now, on a few of the servers I play, they are password protected or whitelisted with a very small population of players. And in the vast majority of cases, foul play has been ruled out. It seems though, that the issue with with tents and barrels despawning occurs when there are items on the ground nearby. Whether that is due to the base being located near loot spawn locations, or whether players are dropping unwanted items on the ground to clear space for better gear, the scenario is, basically, the same. When the items on the ground despawn, the containers will bug out on restart and vanish. I'm not sure if this has already been established by the dev team or not, but I thought it would be beneficial for everyone concerned to ensure awareness. Now I, myself, have not EXTENSIVELY tested this to ensure that it happens every time, but every time it does, there has been loot on the ground. And with my friends who have figured this out prior to my being made aware have attested to the fact that their bases do not despawn as they are build in the wilderness and they travel far from their base before discarding any unwanted items.

  3. Restart server (possibly multiple times)
    • Circumstance #3 (Wilderness Persistence) ---
  1. Place containers in the wilderness
  2. Fill with loot
  3. Restart server multiple times
Additional Information

I would test this myself if I had my own server, but I'm too poor for all of that. I figured the dev team would have the resources to do so.

Event Timeline

I'm on Xbox and my base is gone after a reset someone had items on the ground so you make a good point I hope that's it

I can confirm items on the ground are NOT the cause. My base got raided and the players left gear scattered all over. I arrived to find things in disarray and left to scout out a new site. The server crashed multiple times over the next several hours. I returned later on to find many items were still on the ground exactly where they were when I was last there. The next day I logged in and the items had been despawned from the ground, but all my tents and barrels were still there.

I had this bug too. My base was in the wilderness very far away from any urban areas and I had a car next to it. Car had rare weapons while tent had some basic stuff and clothes etc. My tent totally disappeared while car was intact. So it means there are problems with persistance since there's no way somebody raided me. Only persistent thing so far are vehicles.

Me and my friends built a base, dropped items on multiple occasions (several days in-between as well) server restarts 4 times a day, nothing have disappeared.
