Erratic lock on behaviour with ARMs
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I'm having problems getting a lock on the radars with the new anti-radiation missiles. The ARMs only seem to lock on once every so often.
I can see the emitter on the radar scope. The diamond will show up on the HUD, but no lock or sometimes a very late lock.

I'm running v1.83.144870

Steps To Reproduce

Fly the jet in the provided mission. 4 out of 5 times there will be problems with locking the radiation sources. Doesn't matter if i try the To-201 or the F/A-181. Same symptoms. Doesn't matter if I try high or low approach. Doesn't matter if I have radar on or off.

Additional Information

I've created a mission to test the new long range SAM systems. (I just swap out the jet in the editor to test the different factions)
The mission can be downloaded here

Hello.

Thank you for the report. It seems that the problem might not be in the ARMs, but in the active radar of those turrets. We will have a look at this and see what can be done.

After talking to the designers the way it works right now is according to them as it works in IRL. For you to be able to lock with a ARM onto some of the AA that have directional radar they must first aim with the radar at your plane.

Which means directional radar emitters (i.e. not 360°) are visible by passive radar sensor only when they aim towards the sensor (plane)

  • Cheetah, Tigris and Praetorian have 360° coverage - they are detected and can be locked on from a distance
  • AN/MPQ, Cronus and Centurion have a limited cone - meaning they must aim at you with the radar to be able to detect them and be locked on by the ARM
  • Spartan has IR sensor, not radar - Meaning ARM will not detect or lock onto it.

Even with your explanation there's a problem. The plane demo mission doesn't get a lock on the directional radars when approaching head on into the direction of the sensor array. i can clearly see the half arc on the radar scope when its emitting, but still no lock. It doesn't matter if I approach at 50m, 1km or 3km. The same is true for the blufor jet. Its even erratic on the 360° emitter. At times everything works. The emitters are set to active in the editor.

How does that bit work then? Do the emitters turn themselves off at random?

[edit] I've recorded some demonstrations and added these to the additional info to show you what I mean with erratic. It's pretty much the same flight profile, but it doesn't lock on. Even though the radar is able to track me!
