AI controlled miniguns will not engage cars that have closed cabins
New, NormalPublic

Description

For example in support missions when flying ghosthawks, AI gunners won't engage ifrits or striders. Distance does not matter. Problem started in main branch in version 1.82.

I first wrote this ticket as above, about ghosthawk door gunners, but the problem (feature) is there for all of them, helicopter door gunners (ghosthawks and hurons), helicopters with forward firing miniguns (AH9, Hellcats and Orcas, well these use their rockets when available, but that's not the point) and Qilins with miniguns.

In editor create an ghost hawk helicopter and ifrit hmg. Make the chopper fly around close to ifrit which is in flat terrain, like the airport so it is visible. The chopper never fires at the car. Doesn't matter if the chopper is flown by human or AI.

Additional Information

Another thing about those AI ghosthawk gunners. Only the left one has ever fired at cars or other vehicles like boats. Right one has never fired at anything but infantry.

I understand the relatively small caliber miniguns in ghost hawks won't destroy cars easily, but they can shoot out tires and knock out turrets. And besides when taking fire why should they not shoot back.

Tested in advanced flight model.

Event Timeline

Just did some extra checking. Left gunner shoots at a Quilin (open topped car, doesn't matter if it is armed), so in the case of ifrits and striders the problem might be that the gunner either doesn't see the driver/passengers or "knows" that he shoot at him effectively.

More checking done and ...

Okay, the problem is not restricted to helicopter doorgunners (ghosthawk and huron) and is more precisely about what the ai will engage with a minigun. The same thing happens when a Quilin with a minigun is against a HMG Hunter. To test this, put Quilin behind a Hunter in the editor, range is not an issue, let's say 50 meters and watch what, or more precisely what does not happen. Quilin just stays there without firing. And if the Quilin moves, the Hunter reacts in a few seconds and kills the Quilin crew. So why keep this in the same ticket and not create a new one. Well, I probably will create one in few days after more testing. But I also understand the principle in the Quilin case in a way, if the thinking is that if you are not seen, then you don't expose your position if you can't effectively engage the enemy, but when you are seen wouldn't it be a wise and realistic choice to shoot back with everything you got. Especially, when it doesn't take that many hits to shoot out the tires and knock down the turret. I managed it with about 150 bullets, which the minigun can spit out in about second, maybe less. The Quilin might not survive very long to make a difference, but in my original point in the case of helicopters, those have a much higher chance to survive long enough to get out of range anyway, so why not shoot back.

Another thing about choppers. Probably going to make a new ticket about this one too, eventually. This is tested with both Ghosthawk and Huron against GMG Ifrit (the grenade launcher variant). I flew them in editor against a lone GMG Ifrit in open country. Neither will engage each other even when the chopper is flying slowly around the Ifrit at close range (about 100 meters), not even when I hovered with chopper at 2 m altitude in front of the Ifrit at a range of 50 meters. But at once when the choppers wheels touch the ground, Ifrit opens up and blows the chopper up quite quickly.

Now if this seems trivial to developers to do anything about, would you even consider changing the Ifrits and Striders in Support multiplayer missions to vehicles that the gunners in helicopters will actually shoot at, so the choppers can support the infantry a little better.
