On the stable branch, I chopped down a bunch of trees and many days later (after the trees re-spawned) noticed all the logs still neatly sitting at the base of each tree I had previously chopped down.

Having a long decay timer of logs is good because storing them for firewood is problematic, but if the decay timer is too long then there will be far to many unused logs sitting scattered randomly across chernarus.
