I was cooking, and even though I did not make contact with the camp fire (was roughly 3 feet away), I began receiving messages that I was on fire and my face was melting. I ran and jumped in a near by pond, and went prone under the water but continued to burn. I died within 30 seconds of receiving the first error message.

I've run into this before. Also it appears that in some cases you can lay down in a pond or a stream, be fully submerged and not drown.
Geez
I have replicated this issue twice and the "melting face off" and "I am burning" messages appear to start either when 3-4 pieces of cooked meat are placed in the inventory or when a cooking pot is removed and replaced on a cooking tripod.
To reiterate the OP's comments, there is no way to stop the burning process once started, unless of course, the issue is generated by placing cooked meat in the inventory. Actually that must be the cause surely?

Runs with Cows
That is correct, I had just finished cooking and moved the meat from the pan into my backpack. I replicated this cooking fish over a propane stove as well, it is not just a campfire issue, although I was able to survive that ignition, it wasn't by much.
Hello sethrutan.
In that case I am going to close the ticket, as the issue has been reported and scheduled for a fix.
