When using a fireaxe (tried twice, happened both times, haven't tried with any other axe) to chop firewood. As soon as you chop down the tree, your melee slot gets filled up with a stick automatically. So if you [X] your axe in your hands, you drop it on the ground because the stick has replaced it in your inventory.
