I attempted to create leather today using a barrel. I started by putting the leather and fertilizer in as I had seen done on videos. Combining the two failed, so I checked with some friends who stated that I needed to add water and have it empty first. I wen ahead and emptied it and tried to add the water. As I did, it read an error message stating that something was still in the barrel. Nothing was visible and the barrel contents read as 0 on the indicator at the top. Nothing I tried changed this status including moving the barrel several times, opening and closing it, as well as relogging in.
