I had understood that a hide can still be tanned without a barrel, but produces half as much as a barrel would. When I have tried this with several deer hide, the lime shows red and there is absolutely no option for tanning the hide.

Really? I must have missed it in the changelog. That really sucks. One more manufactured item that has to be found to have a character without manufactured items. I guess this can be closed now then.

yes its true, but you can easily craft your clothes with rabbit pelts.
the chance to catch an rabbit with snare trap is much higher then last build.
took me two days collecting 10 metal wire and catching the rabbits, tanned the pelts in barrels and got 2 tanned leather from one rabbit pelt.
after that i was wearing complete leather clothes including leather backpack.
nice feature request would be to craft leather close to waterproof/resist with animal lard for some ingame days.

As wasnu mentioned in the comments, the mechanic of tanning leather without barrel has been removed from the game and is no longer available.
