I have found many barrels in .58 experimental, I have placed items into them and came back after server restart to the items poofed. Just wanted to drop this into feedback incase no one has yet. Items placed being food/ammo/etc. The Barrels themselves are persistent but their inventory are not from my experience. Yes I closed them as well as left them open, same result.
